Uh... have you CHECKED the POPULATION of INDIA LATELY??? Even with 50% in poverty, that leaves over 500 MILLION people who can afford to buy airline tickets.

Not only that, but India is notorious for overcrowded train accidents. Go figure.

In india only 30% population stay below the poverty line, of which many r capable of getting at least two meals (below poverty line doesnt mean they r beggers!!). Of late, indian economy has opened up new dimensions, unthinkable almost 15 years ago. Opening up economy has brought pvt investors from abroad and NRIs/PIOs. Since, india has 2nd largest population (sobs!!) and highest population growth rate, there is a HUGE market. Many MNCs has therefore set up shop here, so they hav tremendously invested in the country's economy. Expanding economy at a rate unimaginable earlier, has opened up many job avenues and business perspectives. This has increased the nations economy indirectly also. For ur info, abt half of the population is above the low middle class income... who can easily afford an airline ticket of 1000/- as now in india, like all other fastly developing nations time has become money spinner. Jus imagine if even 400 million ppl (sorry to underestimate) wants to travel by flight at least once in their lifetime, how many planes/services/companies do u need for that?? Add to it the revenues and employments it generates... this is a recursive process... and will continue unless the economy is in bad shape.

The two postulates are not interconnected. There are, in India very poor people, rich people and a thriving middle class. The rich and the middle class are the ones that do a lot of traveling by air. Hence more airlines.
