India is a large place so climate varies. However, except for the Himalayas, you are better off visiting between October and March when the climate is cooler.

The Taj Mahal and the Ganges are must sees in my views.

Mumbai and Delhi are the best places amongst the big cities

Goa is a great place for the beaches while a visit to the Himalayas would be good as well.

In terms of the best time, it depends on where you're going. In the south, it tends to be very hot from April-June. There are lots of beautiful places in India. Some that I recommend:

1. Taj Mahal, Agra

2. The beaches of Goa

3. The backwaters of Kerala

4. Mumbai (Bombay)- Fun city, great nightlife!

5. Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

Have fun!

Avoid Indian Summers. They are terribly hot. So anytime between March and June is no.

Best time to visit would be sometime between August and February.

Good places to visit:

1) Taj mahal - Agra (place);

2) Lotus temple - Delhi;

3) Jaipur, jaisalmer and udaipur cities in Rajastan state;

4) Goa - for its beaches and portugese culture;

5) kerala state in the south.

Are you travelling alone ? If yes, then my best advice is consult this with your travel agency. You have to arrange everything before you arrived there.

India is a big country, so you have to decided which places or city that you would like to go.

Delhi is the nicest city to visit because there are a lot of interesting places to see. At least it is easier to go to Taj Mahal (Agra) from Delhi. Also there is a legendary Qutab Mnar, Humayun's Tomb, India Gate (a war memorial likes in Paris (triomph de arch..forgotten how to write it), Purana Qila, Safdarjung's Tomb, Lotus Temple.

From Delhi you can go to Agra, without even stay there or if it is near full moon, I would like to advice you to stay 1 night at Agra, so you have a chance to see Taj Mahal at dawn and after that you can visit Agra Fort, Fathepur-Sikri.

Back to Delhi and the next day you can go to Jaipur. I don't have a chance to visit Jaipur, but if I do have a chance to visit India, I'll go to Delhi again and go to Jaipur.

People said if it is summer, April - May - June, it is not a best time to visit India, because of the weather becomes very hot, and if you are not from Asia it will be worst thing.

But please remember, since you are foreigner, they will charged you twice the indian people for every tourist visit and even air plane ticket. Also, please check all the hotel from beginning otherwise you get cheated by the travel agent (be carefull to choose the travel agent, I have bad experience with one of Delhi travel agent recommended by the EPCH).

So if you don't have much time, I would like to suggest you to go to Delhi...there are a lot of interesting places and be the central city to go to Agra and Jaipur.

Enjoy your time in India, it is a beautiful country and even though I have bad experience, I still would like to come back again.

India may be divided into North South East and West for tourism purposes. 2 weeks at each place is ideal. Maybe in one trip or over several trips.

North - Do the triangle route (Delhi-Jaipur-Agra) followed by a trip to Himalayas (Manali or Nainital or Mussorie or Shimla, my preferences in that order)

South - Kerala (backwaters-beaches), Tamilnadu, Bangalore-Mysore-Ooty, Hyderabad.

East - Calcutta - Varanasi - Bhubaneshwar - Darjeeling

West - Mumbai and Goa

Winter.

Plan your trip to avoid at all costs the summer season. It can get blistering hot and fair-skinned people don't fare so well under our sun. Anytime after September to March should be good.

India is a hee-uge, multi-cultural land. If you have enough time, try and savor at least one-two regions from the north, east, west and south. Each region has their own language, cuisine, traditions, festivals, dress code and culture. You can hit all the metropolitan cities, if you wish. Its the safest way to get the civilized version of most regions.

Be safe and travel smart. Follow whatever advice your travel agent tells you about dress code and how to deal with the locals.

Luck and Fun!

You can never see india in its entireity. Its a huge country and very varied with each step you take. You'll discover somethign new every moment.

So, I think the best choice for you would be to go to www.incredibleindia.org (its a site by the govt) and plan out an itinary.

And just see that you dont miss out places like Kerala and Rajasthan.
