There is a beautiful hill station ( tea-plantations) near Coimbatore called Anamalais. You have to go via Pollachi from Coimbatore...not too far away. The main town in the Anamalais is called Valparai. Most of these hills are not very high ( though some are quite high and cold as well). There are very very few hotels there (probably a couple of them), so if you intend to stay there overnight, you may have to book in advance. The road to Valparai is lovely. It rains for many months in the year and is misty quite often. The landscape is breath-taking. You'll come across many tiny waterfalls and streams on the way. The place is still 'undiscovered' and it will not be like an Ooty or Kodai experience. If you are looking for peace and calm, then go to Valparai, but if you are looking for action, restaurants and shopping, places like Ooty may be better for you. The local language there is both Tamil and Malayalam ( because though it is under Tamilnadu, close by is Palghat and Chalakudy).
